In biology, the corpus luteum is a temporal structure formed in the ovary after an egg has been released during ovulation. It secretes hormones, primarily progesterone, that are essential for the maintenance of the uterine lining during pregnancy. In older usage or in organic chemistry, luteum can also refer to a yellow dye or pigment.
